Pittsburgh, PA – Western Pennsylvania faces a sharp weather change heading into the weekend, with wind gusts potentially reaching 45 mph Friday before colder air brings a risk of frost and freezing temperatures Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Hazardous Weather Outlook issued at 2 a.m. EDT Wednesday, Oct. 14, warns that a strong cold front will cross the region Friday, producing showers and wind gusts of 35 to 45 mph.
The outlook covers western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and northern West Virginia, including the Pittsburgh metropolitan area and surrounding counties.
Friday Front Brings Strong Winds Friday's cold front marks the beginning of the most significant weather transition of the period.
Pittsburgh's local forecast calls for widespread showers, a 100% precipitation probability and a high near 71 degrees.
West winds are expected at 16 to 21 mph, with gusts reaching 34 mph in the city. The broader NWS hazardous weather outlook indicates gusts could reach 45 mph elsewhere across the region.
The stronger winds could affect exposed outdoor activities, particularly where unsecured objects are vulnerable to gusts.
Showers gradually diminish Friday night as temperatures fall toward 40 degrees.
Saturday Night Brings Frost and Freeze Concerns Saturday brings mostly sunny skies, but temperatures will struggle to reach 53 degrees in Pittsburgh, an 18 degree decline from Friday's forecast high.
The coldest conditions arrive Saturday night into Sunday morning, when Pittsburgh temperatures are expected to fall to approximately 35 degrees under mostly clear skies.
The National Weather Service warns that frost and freezing conditions are possible across portions of the broader region as winds diminish and skies clear.
Although Pittsburgh's forecast low remains above freezing, colder locations could experience temperatures at or below 32 degrees.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should monitor updated forecasts and consider protective measures before Saturday night.
The colder conditions follow a period of unsettled weather earlier in the week, including showers and a marginal severe weather risk Wednesday afternoon along and south of the Interstate 70 corridor.
That earlier storm risk is separate from Friday's wind and weekend frost concerns.
Temperatures begin recovering Sunday, with highs reaching the lower 60s before gradually warming into the upper 60s Tuesday.
