Pittsburgh, PA – Rain is expected to return to the Pittsburgh area Sunday into Monday, Oct. 11 12, with roughly 0.50 to 0.75 inches projected as a tropical system moves onshore and shifts north into the Ohio Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the city's climate site at Pittsburgh International Airport had recorded only 0.07 inches of rain through Oct. 5, leaving October precipitation 0.39 inches below normal.
The Weather Prediction Center is showing around 0.50 to 0.75 inches of total rainfall Sunday into Monday for the area, the NWS said. That amount would quickly reduce a rainfall deficit that forecasters expect to reach around 0.78 inches by the end of Saturday.
Dry conditions so far this month follow a wetter period overall. The NWS climate report issued early Tuesday shows Pittsburgh has received 5.10 inches of precipitation since Sept. 1, which is 1.34 inches above normal.
For the year, Pittsburgh International Airport has measured 38.72 inches of precipitation through Oct. 5. That's 7.18 inches above the normal 31.54 inches for the same period.
Monday's rain would therefore address a short term October deficit rather than a year to date precipitation shortage.
The NWS noted that this is typically a dry time of year in Pittsburgh. The Oct. 5 climate report lists normal daily precipitation at 0.09 inches, while no measurable rain was recorded that day.
Residents should expect dry conditions to continue through Saturday before the next rainfall opportunity arrives Sunday and continues into Monday.
