PHILADELPHIA, PA – A potent cold front could trigger severe thunderstorms across the Philadelphia region Friday afternoon and evening, bringing damaging wind gusts, a possible brief tornado and rapidly changing weather conditions before colder air arrives overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Philadelphia/Mount Holly, scattered severe thunderstorms are possible Friday, October 16, with the greatest concern between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Level 2 Severe Weather Risk Issued
Forecasters have placed much of the region under a Level 2 out of 5 slight risk for severe thunderstorms.
The outlook includes Philadelphia, Allentown and Reading in Pennsylvania, Trenton and Atlantic City in New Jersey, and portions of Delaware.
The primary threat is damaging thunderstorm winds, although the National Weather Service also identifies a nonzero chance of a brief tornado, mainly in eastern Pennsylvania.
Narrow Squall Line Could Move Across Region
Forecasters warn that severe weather may develop into a narrow squall line moving from west to east.
Such a line could bring a concentrated period of damaging wind gusts as thunderstorms cross affected communities.
Residents should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions during the late afternoon and evening, particularly those traveling or attending outdoor activities.
Much Colder Weather Follows Friday Night
Behind the cold front, temperatures are expected to turn significantly colder Friday night.
The National Weather Service has not specified exact overnight lows in this update, but residents should prepare for a noticeable temperature drop.
Residents Encouraged to Monitor Warnings
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, monitor updated forecasts and ensure they can receive severe thunderstorm or tornado warnings.
A slight risk means scattered severe thunderstorms are possible, not that every community will experience severe weather.
Additional forecast updates could refine the timing and location of the greatest threat before storms arrive Friday.
