PHILADELPHIA, PA – Pennsylvania is heading into November with temperatures climbing into the 70s around Philadelphia, but a longer range NOAA outlook is raising questions about rain, snow and changing weather conditions as Thanksgiving holiday travel approaches.
The latest outlooks suggest warmer than normal temperatures could persist across much of Pennsylvania into late November, while precipitation probabilities shift from wetter to drier and back toward wetter conditions in the Philadelphia area.
According to NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, outlooks issued Friday, Oct. 30, favor above normal temperatures across Pennsylvania during Nov. 5 9, Nov. 7 13 and Nov. 14 27.
The precipitation outlook is more complicated.
During Nov. 5 9, above normal precipitation is slightly favored around Philadelphia and portions of eastern Pennsylvania. That changes during Nov. 7 13, when below normal precipitation becomes favored across much of the state.
By Nov. 14 27, the outlook shifts again, with above normal precipitation favored across southern and eastern Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia. The outlook covers Thanksgiving on Thursday, Nov. 26, and the surrounding holiday travel period.
Could Pennsylvania see Thanksgiving snow?
It's a possibility that cannot yet be assessed reliably. NOAA's extended outlooks do not predict individual snowstorms, snowfall totals or precipitation types. They indicate whether temperatures and precipitation are more likely to finish above or below historical averages over a given period.
The warmer than normal temperature signal may favor milder conditions overall, but it does not eliminate the possibility of shorter cold spells or wintry precipitation.
For now, the immediate forecast looks considerably warmer.
The National Weather Service forecasts sunshine and a high near 62 degrees Saturday in Philadelphia, followed by 64 Sunday, 67 Monday and 71 Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday could reach 72 degrees.
Pennsylvania residents will also turn clocks back one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 1, bringing earlier darkness during evening commutes.
Rain chances increase in Philadelphia later in the week, reaching 60% Thursday and Thursday night before dropping to 50% Friday.
As Thanksgiving approaches, the key question for Pennsylvania travelers will be whether the late November wetter pattern persists and whether colder temperatures develop alongside it.
