Philadelphia, PA – Residents across the Mid Atlantic should prepare for several rounds of rain this week, with the most widespread rainfall expected Thursday night, October 15, into Friday, October 16. The approaching weather system could bring wet roads, slower commutes and rising river levels across portions of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service Middle Atlantic River Forecast Center, multiple rounds of rain will move across the region through Friday as an area of low pressure travels through the Great Lakes.
Heaviest Rain Expected October 15–16 The most widespread precipitation is forecast to develop Thursday night and continue into Friday, potentially affecting morning and evening travel.
NOAA's 72 hour precipitation forecast, ending Saturday, October 17, at 8 a.m. EDT, indicates varying rainfall totals throughout the Mid Atlantic.
Much of the region is forecast to receive light to moderate rainfall, while some northern areas could experience higher accumulations.
Drivers traveling through the Philadelphia metropolitan area, central and eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and neighboring communities may encounter wet pavement and reduced visibility during periods of heavier rain.
Rivers Could Rise 1–3 Feet Forecasters also indicate that rivers receiving the heaviest rainfall could rise approximately 1 to 3 feet.
However, the National Weather Service emphasizes that river flooding is not expected at this time.
Although widespread flooding is not anticipated, residents living near rivers and streams should monitor changing conditions as rainfall moves through the region.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time Thursday night and Friday, particularly during periods of steady rainfall.
The timing and intensity of precipitation will vary by location, and updated forecasts could provide additional details as the system approaches.
Residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service forecasts through Friday, October 16.
