Johnstown, PA – Strong winds are expected to develop across parts of southwestern Pennsylvania Saturday night, bringing gusts up to 45 mph and the possibility of falling tree limbs and isolated power outages. Residents in Cambria and Somerset counties should prepare for gusty conditions lasting into Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in State College, a Wind Advisory will take effect at 8 p.m. EDT Saturday, Oct. 10, and remain in place until 2 p.m. EDT Sunday, Oct. 11 , for Cambria and Somerset counties.
Forecasters expect southeast winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts reaching 45 mph.
The advisory includes Johnstown, Somerset and surrounding communities in the Laurel Highlands region.
The strongest winds are expected on the western side of the tallest mountain ridges , where terrain can influence wind speeds and produce stronger gusts.
The National Weather Service warns that gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects, including patio furniture, trash containers and outdoor decorations.
Tree limbs could also be blown down, potentially resulting in a few power outages.
Residents should secure lightweight outdoor items before winds strengthen Saturday evening, particularly in exposed locations and areas near the mountain ridges.
Drivers should use additional caution overnight and Sunday morning, especially when operating high profile vehicles such as tractor trailers, buses and recreational vehicles.
Crosswinds may make vehicle control more difficult on exposed highways, bridges and elevated roadways.
Homeowners should also remain alert for weakened tree branches near homes, vehicles and electrical lines.
Although the advisory covers both counties, wind speeds and impacts may vary depending on elevation and terrain.
The Wind Advisory is scheduled to expire at 2 p.m. EDT Sunday , but residents should continue monitoring National Weather Service forecasts for any changes.
The National Weather Service urges motorists to use extra caution and residents to secure outdoor objects before the strongest gusts arrive.
