The Dalles, OR – Strong winds could create hazardous travel conditions across portions of northern Oregon and central Washington beginning Thursday evening, Oct. 22, with gusts reaching 50 mph overnight and continuing into Friday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, a Wind Advisory takes effect at 7 p.m. Thursday and remains in place until 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, covering the eastern Columbia River Gorge and Kittitas Valley.
Forecasters report 80% confidence that breezy to windy conditions will develop across the affected areas, with winds blowing from the west to northwest.
Wind Gusts Could Reach 50 MPH
Sustained winds are expected to reach 25 to 35 mph, with stronger gusts potentially reaching 50 mph.
Communities near The Dalles, Oregon, and Ellensburg, Washington, are among the areas highlighted in the weather briefing.
The strongest winds could make driving difficult, particularly for high profile vehicles such as commercial trucks, recreational vehicles and vehicles towing trailers.
Loose outdoor furniture, trash containers and other unsecured objects could also be blown around.
Thursday Night Through Friday Morning
The advisory begins Thursday evening, when many residents may still be traveling or returning home from work.
Conditions could remain hazardous overnight before winds begin easing Friday morning.
Residents planning outdoor activities, including camping and cycling, should monitor changing conditions. Unsecured tents and lightweight equipment may be especially vulnerable to strong gusts.
Drivers traveling through exposed portions of the Columbia River Gorge should use additional caution and be prepared for sudden crosswinds.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to secure loose outdoor items and monitor updated forecasts as the advisory approaches.
