Rogue River, OR – A reported student carrying a firearm prompted a precautionary security response at Rogue River Junior Senior High School in Jackson County Thursday morning, October 29. Deputies investigated the report, determined it was unfounded and confirmed the school had returned to normal operations.
According to the Jackson County Sheriff 's Office, deputies and Rogue River Police Department officers responded at approximately 7:31 a.m. Thursday after receiving information that a student might be carrying a firearm in a backpack while traveling to school.
School Placed in Precautionary Secure Status
School officials placed the campus in a "secure status" while law enforcement investigated the potential threat.
Authorities contacted the student after a parent dropped them off at school but before the student entered the building.
Deputies confirmed the student did not possess a firearm.
The precautionary secure status was lifted shortly after 8 a.m., allowing the school to resume normal operations.
Sheriff's Office Confirms No Ongoing Threat
Investigators determined there was no credible threat to students, teachers or school staff.
The sheriff's office emphasized that a "secure status" differs from a full school lockdown.
During a secure status, students and staff are protected from potential external threats while normal classroom activities may continue.
A lockdown, by comparison, is used when an immediate threat exists inside or near a school and requires students and staff to remain hidden and quiet.
Officials said the response was precautionary and intended to protect the school community while deputies verified the information.
The Jackson County Sheriff's Office thanked school administrators for their cooperation and emphasized that all reports involving potential school safety threats are taken seriously.
No injuries or ongoing threats were reported , and authorities said no additional information was available for release.
