Portland, OR – Residents across northwest Oregon and southwest Washington are being urged to protect sensitive plants as widespread frost and possible freezing temperatures threaten communities Friday morning, Oct. 23, and Saturday morning, Oct. 24, 2026. Temperatures could fall as low as 31 degrees in portions of the Willamette Valley and Oregon Coast Range lowlands.
According to the National Weather Service NWS Portland office, multiple Frost Advisories and Freeze Watches were issued Wednesday evening, Oct. 21, covering communities from the Portland Vancouver metropolitan area south toward Salem, Corvallis and Eugene.
First Frost Advisory Begins Thursday Night, Oct. 22
Frost Advisories take effect at 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, and continue until 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, across portions of the Tualatin Valley, central Oregon Coast Range, southwest Washington and the central Willamette Valley.
Temperatures between 33 and 36 degrees could allow frost to develop, potentially damaging uncovered plants.
Affected communities include Hillsboro, Forest Grove, Tigard, Sherwood, Salem, McMinnville, Longview and Battle Ground.
Freeze Watches Include Eugene and Corvallis
A more significant cold threat is forecast for the Benton, Linn and Lane county lowlands.
Communities including Eugene, Springfield, Corvallis, Albany and Cottage Grove are under Freeze Watches from 11 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22, until 9 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, and again Friday night into Saturday morning, Oct. 24.
Temperatures could reach 31 degrees, potentially killing sensitive vegetation and damaging unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Portland and Vancouver Face Saturday Frost
A separate Frost Advisory covers Portland, Vancouver, Gresham, Oregon City, Lake Oswego and surrounding communities from 11 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23, until 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 24.
Temperatures between 34 and 36 degrees could produce frost across vulnerable neighborhoods.
Residents Urged to Protect Plants
The NWS recommends moving sensitive potted plants indoors and covering vulnerable outdoor vegetation with lightweight cotton fabric, such as bedsheets or thin blankets.
Residents in areas under Freeze Watches should also consider protecting exposed outdoor plumbing.
A Freeze Watch means freezing temperatures are possible, while a Frost Advisory indicates conditions favorable for damaging frost.
