Portland, OR – Residents across portions of western Oregon and southwest Washington are being urged to protect outdoor plants Saturday night as temperatures fall into the mid 30s, bringing widespread frost concerns by early Sunday. Some communities in the Upper Hood River Valley face an even greater threat, with a high probability of temperatures dropping below freezing.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, Frost Advisories remain in effect from midnight until 9 a.m. PDT Sunday, Oct. 11 , covering portions of the northern Oregon Coast Range, the outer southeast Portland metro area, the Willamette Valley, Cascade foothills and southwest Washington.
Temperatures are expected to fall between 33 and 36 degrees across most advisory areas, allowing frost to form on exposed surfaces and vegetation.
Affected Oregon communities include Sandy, Estacada, Albany, Lebanon, Brownsville, Vernonia, Oakridge, Mill City, Welches, Rhododendron, Parkdale and Odell.
In southwest Washington, communities including Battle Ground, Ridgefield, La Center, Yacolt, Amboy and Hockinson are also included.
The greatest freezing concern is in the Upper Hood River Valley , particularly near Parkdale and Dee. Forecasters estimate a 70% to 90% probability of temperatures falling below 32 degrees in those locations overnight into Sunday morning.
Most of the Upper Hood River Valley, including Odell, is expected to remain above freezing, with lows between 33 and 36 degrees.
The National Weather Service warns that frost could damage sensitive outdoor vegetation and potentially kill unprotected plants.
Residents should consider bringing potted plants indoors or covering vulnerable vegetation with lightweight cotton fabrics, such as bedsheets or thin blankets, to help retain warmth.
Gardeners and homeowners are encouraged to complete preparations Saturday evening before temperatures fall overnight.
The advisories are scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. Sunday , although localized temperatures and frost conditions may vary.
