PORTLAND, OR – Portland residents will experience a noticeable temperature change heading into the weekend as Wednesday's sunny, 73 degree weather gives way to highs in the low 60s by Friday. Rain chances are also expected to return Saturday night, signaling another shift in the weather pattern across the Portland metropolitan area.
According to the National Weather Service in Portland, temperatures will fall approximately 12 degrees between Wednesday and Friday, with overnight lows dipping into the lower 40s. The forecast calls for dry conditions through much of Saturday before the possibility of rain returns Saturday night and Sunday.
The changing conditions come as a broader Pacific weather system influences portions of the western United States, bringing cooler temperatures and unsettled weather to some locations.
Unlike parts of California and the Southwest facing more significant rainfall concerns, Portland's immediate forecast does not indicate a major storm or excessive rainfall threat.
Five Day Portland Weather Outlook Wednesday 10/21: Sunny skies dominate the forecast, with afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 73 degrees. Northwest winds around 7 mph are expected, making Wednesday the warmest day of the five day period. Wednesday night will remain mostly clear, with temperatures falling to around 47 degrees and calm winds developing.
Thursday 10/22: Increasing clouds will accompany a noticeable cooldown, with afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 66 degrees. Winds will remain relatively light, becoming northwest around 6 mph during the afternoon. Thursday night will be mostly cloudy before skies gradually clear, with temperatures dropping to around 43 degrees.
Friday 10/23: Patchy fog is possible before 8 a.m., which could affect visibility during the early commute. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies are expected, with afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 61 degrees. Friday night will be mostly clear, with temperatures falling to around 42 degrees, the coldest overnight low in the five day forecast.
Saturday 10/24: Partly sunny conditions will bring afternoon temperatures near 63 degrees. The daytime forecast remains dry, providing opportunities for outdoor activities across the Portland area. Saturday night brings increasing clouds and a chance of rain, with temperatures falling to around 44 degrees.
Sunday 10/25: A chance of rain continues during the day, although partly sunny skies are also expected. Afternoon temperatures will reach approximately 63 degrees. Sunday night remains partly cloudy, with another chance of rain and temperatures falling to around 44 degrees.
What the Weekend Change Means The most noticeable weather difference will be the cooler afternoons and chilly mornings compared with Wednesday's mild conditions.
Residents planning early outdoor activities Friday should be prepared for patchy fog and temperatures in the lower 40s.
Saturday offers a potentially favorable window for outdoor plans before rain chances return during the evening.
The National Weather Service forecast does not provide specific precipitation probabilities or rainfall totals for the weekend, so the timing and intensity of any rain remain uncertain.
Extended Outlook: October 28 November 3 The NOAA Climate Prediction Center's eight to 14 day outlook, issued October 20, places northwestern Oregon near an area favoring near normal precipitation during October 28 through November 3.
Temperatures across western Oregon are also generally favored to remain near seasonal averages during that period.
These longer range projections describe broad trends rather than individual storms or daily forecasts.
For Portland, the immediate outlook points toward a cooler weekend, with rain chances returning after several days of predominantly dry weather.
