PENDLETON, OR – Eastern Oregon residents face a sharp temperature drop heading into the weekend as Pendleton transitions from a sunny 69 degree Wednesday to Thursday showers and overnight lows plunging to 27 degrees Friday night. The colder conditions could affect outdoor plants, exposed plumbing and residents preparing for early morning activities across Umatilla County.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, rain chances increase to 60% Thursday afternoon before temperatures fall below freezing Friday and Saturday nights. The forecast also indicates additional shower chances Sunday, bringing a combination of unsettled weather and cold overnight temperatures to the region.
The changing conditions coincide with a broader western U.S. weather pattern involving a Pacific storm system and cooler air spreading into portions of the West.
Although significant rainfall threats are concentrated farther south across California and the Four Corners region, Pendleton's local forecast does not indicate a specific flash flood threat.
Five Day Pendleton Weather Outlook Wednesday 10/21: Patchy frost and fog are possible before 11 a.m., followed by sunny skies and afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 69 degrees. Light winds are expected. Wednesday night will be partly cloudy, with patchy fog developing after 2 a.m. and temperatures falling to around 37 degrees.
Thursday 10/22: Showers become likely, particularly after 2 p.m., with a 60% precipitation chance. Afternoon temperatures reach approximately 63 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Rainfall amounts are expected to remain below one tenth of an inch. Thursday night brings a 40% chance of showers before 11 p.m., with lows near 33 degrees and wind gusts potentially reaching 23 mph.
Friday 10/23: Sunny skies return, but afternoon temperatures will reach only about 59 degrees, representing a 10 degree decline from Wednesday's forecast high. Southwest winds of 8 to 11 mph may produce gusts reaching 21 mph. Friday night temperatures fall sharply to approximately 27 degrees under mostly clear skies.
Saturday 10/24: Mostly sunny conditions are expected, with afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 61 degrees. Despite the pleasant daytime weather, Saturday night will remain cold, with mostly cloudy skies and temperatures dropping to around 29 degrees, marking another night below freezing.
Sunday 10/25: A 30% chance of showers returns, primarily before 11 a.m. Otherwise, partly sunny skies are expected, with afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 59 degrees. Sunday night brings another chance of showers before 11 p.m., followed by partly cloudy skies and lows near 28 degrees.
Freezing Temperatures Become the Main Concern The most significant weather change arrives Friday night, when temperatures could fall approximately 32 degrees below Friday's afternoon high.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should consider protective measures before temperatures reach freezing levels.
Exposed outdoor plumbing and irrigation equipment may also require attention, particularly in locations vulnerable to overnight freezing.
Drivers should remain aware of patchy fog Wednesday morning and changing road conditions during Thursday's showers.
Extended Outlook: October 28 November 3 The NOAA Climate Prediction Center's eight to 14 day outlook, issued October 20, places northeastern Oregon near an area favoring near normal temperatures between October 28 and November 3.
Precipitation probabilities across much of eastern Oregon lean above normal during the same period, suggesting a potentially wetter pattern approaching November.
These projections describe broader weather tendencies rather than individual storms or daily rainfall amounts.
For Pendleton, the immediate concern remains Thursday's showers followed by multiple nights of freezing temperatures heading into the weekend.
