PARKDALE, OR – Temperatures could fall to between 32 and 36 degrees in Oregon's Upper Hood River Valley early Saturday, Oct. 10, bringing frost that could damage sensitive outdoor plants, particularly near Parkdale.
The National Weather Service in Portland issued a Frost Advisory Thursday morning for the Upper Hood River Valley, including Parkdale and Odell. The advisory takes effect at midnight Friday night and continues until 9 a.m. PDT Saturday.
Forecasters expect temperatures low enough for frost to form during the overnight and early morning hours. The weather service specifically highlighted areas near Parkdale as a focus of the advisory.
Frost could harm tender outdoor vegetation, and sensitive plants left uncovered may be killed.
Residents with gardens, flowers and potted plants should prepare before temperatures fall Friday night.
The Weather Service recommends temporarily moving cold sensitive potted plants indoors when possible. For plants that cannot be moved, lightweight cotton coverings, such as bedsheets or thin blankets, can help retain heat and provide protection against frost.
The advisory applies to the Upper Hood River Valley rather than the entire Hood River County area. The bulletin does not indicate that all locations in the county will experience the same temperatures or frost conditions.
While temperatures may remain above freezing in some locations, frost formation is still expected within the advisory area.
Residents should complete plant protection preparations Friday before the advisory begins at midnight.
The greatest concern is overnight Friday into Saturday morning, with the Frost Advisory scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. PDT Saturday. Residents should monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for any changes to the timing or extent of the frost risk.
