Medford, OR – The coldest temperatures of the season so far are expected to grip Southern Oregon and parts of Northern California this weekend, with lows dropping into the 20s and frost, freezing conditions and even snow showers possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, cold mornings will continue through the week, with the most significant chill expected Sunday and Monday morning.
Frost or freezing conditions are possible this weekend in Oregon’s Rogue and Applegate valleys. Communities along and east of the Cascades face an even sharper temperature drop, with some locations forecast to reach the upper teens or 20s.
NWS projections show Alturas potentially falling to around 20 degrees Monday morning , while Klamath Falls could reach about 22. Lakeview is forecast near 25, while Mount Shasta could drop to around 28.
The cold could affect vulnerable plants and animals, and forecasters are encouraging residents to take precautions now to protect sensitive vegetation.
There is also a winter weather component to the forecast.
Snow showers are possible Sunday morning across Lake and Modoc counties. Although forecasters do not expect snow accumulation, temperatures could become cold enough for slick spots to develop on roadways.
That could create localized travel concerns for drivers, particularly during the colder morning hours.
Temperatures are expected to rebound significantly each afternoon, but repeated cold mornings will remain the primary concern into early next week.
Residents across Southern Oregon and Northern California should continue monitoring updated forecasts as the weekend approaches, particularly if traveling early Sunday or Monday.
