Medford, OR — Freezing temperatures could threaten gardens, crops and sensitive vegetation across southern Oregon early Monday, October 12. The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning as temperatures are expected to fall to 30 degrees.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the warning takes effect at 2 a.m. Monday and continues until 9 a.m. The alert covers portions of Jackson and Josephine counties, including the Rogue, Illinois and Applegate valleys.
Communities affected include Medford, Ashland, Jacksonville, Grants Pass, Central Point, Rogue River, Cave Junction and surrounding areas.
Forecasters warn that freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Residents should protect tender plants before temperatures fall overnight.
The warning follows another cold morning Sunday, October 11, when a Frost Advisory remains active until 8 a.m.
Temperatures near 33 degrees could produce widespread frost across the valleys.
At Rogue Valley International Airport, temperatures were approximately 36 degrees early Sunday under clear skies.
Sunshine should push afternoon temperatures to 66 degrees, with north winds gusting as high as 21 mph.
However, another sharp temperature drop arrives Sunday night.
Temperatures should fall to approximately 33 degrees around Medford, with frost developing after 4 a.m. Monday. Some surrounding valleys could experience colder conditions.
Columbus Day brings improving weather after the morning freeze threat. Sunshine returns, with afternoon highs near 67 degrees.
Monday night remains clear, with temperatures around 35 degrees.
Tuesday warms to 72 degrees, followed by Wednesday highs near 76.
The five day outlook shows a stronger warming trend Thursday and Friday, with temperatures reaching 84 and 86 degrees, respectively.
Saturday should remain sunny, with highs near 77 degrees.
Despite warmer afternoons ahead, Monday's freezing temperatures remain the most immediate concern for southern Oregon residents.
