Medford, OR – Some communities across southwestern Oregon are preparing for their coldest temperatures of the season Saturday morning, Oct. 24, as colder air moves into the region Friday night. A frost advisory has been issued for portions of the Umpqua Basin and Coquille Valley, where temperatures could fall into the middle 30s, potentially threatening sensitive plants and animals.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, the frost advisory will be in effect from 2 a.m. until 10 a.m. Saturday, with temperatures expected to range between 33 and 36 degrees for approximately three hours.
The advisory covers portions of Coos and Douglas counties, particularly the Coquille and Umpqua river valleys.
Affected communities include outlying areas near Coos Bay, Myrtle Point and Coquille, along with Scottsburg, Elkton, Sutherlin, Roseburg, Camas Valley, Canyonville and Glendale.
Forecasters warn that the incoming colder air could produce the lowest temperatures recorded so far this season in some of these locations.
Although temperatures are generally expected to remain slightly above freezing, frost can still develop on exposed surfaces under favorable overnight conditions.
The National Weather Service cautions that sensitive vegetation and animals not accustomed to colder conditions could be at risk.
Residents with outdoor gardens, flowers or temperature sensitive crops should consider covering vulnerable plants or moving potted vegetation indoors before temperatures drop Friday night.
Pet owners should also ensure outdoor animals have appropriate shelter and protection from the cold.
The greatest concern is during the early Saturday morning hours, when temperatures are expected to reach their lowest levels before gradually recovering after sunrise.
The advisory is focused on the Umpqua Basin and Coquille Valley rather than all of southwestern Oregon.
Residents are encouraged to monitor local temperatures because frost development can vary depending on elevation, terrain and surrounding conditions.
