EUGENE, OR – Residents across Eugene and the southern Willamette Valley should prepare for colder mornings heading into the weekend as temperatures fall from Wednesday's pleasant 72 degrees to overnight lows near 34 degrees by Friday night. The National Weather Service is forecasting frost Friday and Saturday mornings, creating potential concerns for sensitive outdoor plants.
According to the National Weather Service forecast for Eugene, patchy frost is expected Friday morning, followed by areas of frost Saturday morning. Afternoon temperatures will also decline noticeably, with Friday's high reaching approximately 60 degrees before a slight rebound Saturday.
The changing conditions come as a broader Pacific weather pattern influences portions of the western United States, bringing cooler temperatures and unsettled conditions to some areas.
For Eugene, however, the most immediate concern is not heavy rainfall or damaging winds but the arrival of chilly overnight temperatures and frost.
Five Day Eugene Weather Outlook Wednesday 10/21: Mostly sunny skies will bring afternoon temperatures near 72 degrees, making Wednesday the warmest day of the current five day forecast. Winds will remain relatively light, becoming north northwest around 5 mph during the afternoon. Wednesday night brings increasing clouds, with temperatures falling to approximately 43 degrees.
Thursday 10/22: Patchy fog is possible before 10 a.m., followed by partly sunny skies and afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 66 degrees. Northwest winds around 6 mph are expected during the afternoon. Thursday night will be mostly cloudy before gradually becoming mostly clear, with lows near 36 degrees and patchy fog developing between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m. Friday.
Friday 10/23: Patchy fog is possible before 8 a.m., while patchy frost is forecast before 9 a.m. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies will accompany afternoon temperatures near 60 degrees, representing a 12 degree decline from Wednesday's high. Friday night will be mostly clear, with temperatures falling to approximately 34 degrees. Areas of frost are expected after 4 a.m.
Saturday 10/24: Areas of frost are expected before 9 a.m., followed by partly sunny skies and afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 63 degrees. Saturday night brings mostly cloudy conditions and a chance of rain, mainly after 11 p.m., with temperatures falling to around 38 degrees.
Sunday 10/25: A chance of rain continues during the day, with partly sunny skies and afternoon temperatures reaching approximately 63 degrees. Sunday night brings another chance of rain, primarily before 11 p.m., followed by partly cloudy conditions and temperatures falling to around 38 degrees.
Frost Could Affect Outdoor Plants The coldest period is expected late Friday night into early Saturday morning, when temperatures near 34 degrees could support frost formation.
Residents with sensitive gardens, flowers and outdoor plants should consider protective measures before the colder conditions arrive.
Patchy fog Friday morning could also reduce visibility locally, particularly in low lying areas.
Extended Outlook: October 28 November 3 The NOAA Climate Prediction Center's eight to 14 day outlook, issued October 20, places western Oregon near an area favoring near normal temperatures from October 28 through November 3.
Precipitation probabilities across the southern Willamette Valley are near the transition between near normal and above normal conditions.
These outlooks describe general weather trends rather than specific storms or rainfall totals.
For Eugene, the immediate weather concern remains the arrival of frost Friday and Saturday mornings, followed by rain chances returning late Saturday.
