BEND, OR – A Freeze Warning remains in effect across Central Oregon and the Wallowa Valley early Saturday, Oct. 10, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 28 to 30 degrees, potentially damaging crops, sensitive plants and unprotected outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, the warnings remain in effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. PDT Saturday, covering communities in Central Oregon and portions of Wallowa County in northeastern Oregon.
In Central Oregon, temperatures could drop to 30 degrees overnight in the warning area, which includes Bend, Redmond, Prineville and Madras.
The National Weather Service warns that frost and freezing conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation. Unprotected outdoor plumbing could also sustain damage as temperatures fall below freezing.
Farther northeast, the Wallowa Valley faces even colder conditions, with temperatures expected to reach as low as 28 degrees Saturday morning.
The warning includes Wallowa County, with Enterprise, Joseph and Wallowa among the communities identified by forecasters.
Temperatures at or below freezing can damage tender vegetation, particularly plants that remain outdoors during the early autumn growing season.
Residents with gardens, crops or sensitive landscaping should take precautions before temperatures drop overnight Friday.
The National Weather Service recommends protecting tender plants from the cold. Residents may also want to protect exposed outdoor plumbing where freezing temperatures could cause damage.
Both Freeze Warnings were continued in the National Weather Service's Friday afternoon update, rather than newly issued.
The greatest concern is during the overnight and early morning hours Saturday, with both warnings scheduled to expire at 10 a.m. PDT.
Residents across the affected areas should prepare for freezing temperatures before bedtime Friday and monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts for any changes to the warnings.
