Ashland, OR – Drivers traveling through higher elevations of Southern Oregon should prepare for snowy conditions and potentially slick roads Monday, Oct. 26, through noon Tuesday, Oct. 27, as winter weather affects mountain travel routes.
According to the National Weather Service in Medford, snowy conditions are expected to persist at elevations of 4,500 feet and higher through noon Tuesday. Forecasters warn that slippery road surfaces could develop, particularly during the overnight hours when drivers may encounter changing conditions.
Light snow accumulations are expected, although the primary concern is reduced traction on higher elevation roadways rather than significant snowfall totals.
Images shared by the National Weather Service on Monday morning showed snowy conditions at the Mount Ashland Ski Area and snow covered ground near Diamond Lake. A TripCheck camera image from Diamond Lake, at approximately 5,285 feet, also showed snow alongside the roadway.
The advisory is particularly relevant for motorists traveling through mountain areas near Ashland in Jackson County, southwest of Medford, and other higher elevation routes across Southern Oregon.
While lower elevation communities may experience different weather conditions, drivers heading into the mountains should remain alert for rapidly changing road surfaces.
The National Weather Service recommends reducing speeds to match conditions and remaining mindful of road maintenance crews working to keep routes safe.
Motorists should also allow additional travel time, maintain extra following distance and check current road conditions before heading into higher elevations.
