OKLAHOMA CITY — Severe thunderstorms could develop across central Oklahoma Monday, Nov. 2, as a strengthening Plains storm system sends rain, gusty winds and thunderstorms through the Oklahoma City area before a cooler and much quieter Tuesday.
The National Weather Service forecast for Oklahoma City calls for a high near 78 degrees Monday , with showers and thunderstorms developing during the morning and becoming likely during the afternoon. Some storms could become severe, while south winds of 17 to 21 mph could gust as high as 36 mph . Rain chances are 70%.
Severe Storms Possible Monday Sunday provides the warm and increasingly humid lead in.
Patchy fog is possible early Sunday before mostly cloudy skies and a high near 74. Sunday night remains unusually mild around 64, with south winds increasing to 8 to 16 mph and gusts reaching roughly 25 mph.
The atmosphere becomes considerably more active Monday. The local forecast calls for thunderstorms between approximately 9 a.m. and noon, followed by additional showers and possible thunderstorms during the afternoon.
NOAA's broader Weather Prediction Center guidance also identifies the Central and Southern Plains as an area where thunderstorms could become severe Monday as a strong low pressure system rapidly intensifies over the Central High Plains.
Storm Threat Continues Monday Night The severe weather potential does not necessarily end at sunset.
Showers remain likely Monday evening, with thunderstorms possible before 9 p.m. The National Weather Service again notes that some storms could be severe .
Rain chances remain at 70%, while winds shift from south to west northwest after midnight and could gust as high as 33 mph. Temperatures fall to around 57.
That wind shift marks the arrival of cooler air behind the system.
10° Drop Tuesday Tuesday brings a rapid change.
Mostly sunny skies return, but the high reaches only around 68 degrees , about 10 degrees cooler than Monday. Tuesday night falls to around 49 before sunshine continues Wednesday with another high near 68.
Thursday and Friday remain mostly clear with highs around 68 and 67, followed by mostly sunny skies Saturday near 69.
The immediate Nov. 2 storm system remains the primary weather story, but the cooler air behind it should not be confused with the beginning of sustained winter weather.
NOAA's broader Nov. 8–14 outlook continues to favor above normal temperatures across much of the Plains, supporting the larger national theme of November warmth continuing through much of the first half of the month.
For Oklahoma City, however, the priority is much closer: 78° warmth, gusty south winds and the potential for severe thunderstorms Monday, Nov. 2, followed by a cooler and quieter Tuesday.
