Guymon, OK – The Oklahoma Panhandle could see stronger winds and changing temperatures next week as a developing Rockies storm approaches the central Plains, although the system’s eventual track will determine whether conditions stay dry or turn wetter.
The National Weather Service in Pueblo, Colorado, is monitoring the storm for roughly Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 12 14. Forecasters say confidence is increasing that Colorado’s Continental Divide will receive accumulating snow, but considerable uncertainty remains over the system’s track, strength and timing.
That uncertainty could become important farther southeast across the High Plains, including the Oklahoma Panhandle.
The NWS Pueblo outlook shows several potential storm tracks emerging from the Rockies. Depending on which scenario develops, areas east and southeast of the mountains could experience warm, windy and dry weather or a cooler pattern with better chances for precipitation.
For the Oklahoma Panhandle, a track keeping the region south of the storm could favor warmer, drier and potentially windy conditions. A farther south track could increase opportunities for cooler weather and precipitation.
Those scenarios remain preliminary. The Colorado outlook does not provide specific Oklahoma wind speeds, temperatures or rainfall probabilities, and it does not indicate snow for Oklahoma.
The clearest winter weather signal remains in Colorado’s mountains, where accumulating snow is increasingly likely. Winter weather in the Rockies during October is not unusual, particularly at higher elevations.
For areas farther onto the Plains, including Oklahoma, the bigger question is how the storm reorganizes after crossing the mountains.
Readers in Guymon and the Oklahoma Panhandle should monitor upcoming National Weather Service forecasts as Oct. 12 14 approaches. Later guidance should clarify whether the developing system brings stronger dry winds or a cooler, wetter change to the region.
