Buffalo, OK – Residents in northwest Oklahoma are being warned to prepare for a potentially damaging freeze this weekend, with temperatures possibly dropping to 30 degrees early Saturday morning, October 17. The approaching cold could threaten gardens, crops and other sensitive vegetation across two counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, a Freeze Watch was issued at 12:51 p.m. Thursday, October 15, for Harper and Ellis counties. The watch covers late Friday night through Saturday morning as temperatures could fall below freezing.
Which Oklahoma Communities Are Affected?
The Freeze Watch includes Buffalo, Laverne and the surrounding communities in Harper County, along with Arnett, Shattuck, Gage and Fargo in Ellis County.
These communities in far northwestern Oklahoma could experience temperatures as low as 30 degrees , potentially creating damaging frost and freeze conditions.
Residents should prepare before Friday evening, particularly those with outdoor plants or agricultural operations.
Why Temperatures Near 30 Degrees Matter
Temperatures below the freezing mark of 32 degrees can damage or kill sensitive vegetation, especially plants that remain actively growing during the autumn season.
Even a relatively brief freeze can affect gardens, flowers and crops that have not been protected from colder conditions.
The National Weather Service specifically warns that frost and freezing temperatures could kill crops and other vulnerable vegetation.
What Residents Should Do Before Saturday
Homeowners should consider moving potted plants indoors and covering tender outdoor vegetation before temperatures begin falling Friday night.
Farmers and gardeners should monitor updated forecasts and take precautions to protect vulnerable crops.
A Freeze Watch means freezing temperatures are possible but not guaranteed. Forecasters may upgrade the alert to a Freeze Warning if confidence increases.
The watch is scheduled from 1 a.m. until 9 a.m. CDT Saturday, October 17 .
