West Chester, OH – A 91 year old Butler County resident facing out of pocket vehicle repair costs after a September traffic crash is getting unexpected help from a local man who offered to cover the remaining bill.
According to the Butler County Sheriff ’s Office, Sheriff Richard K. Jones first discussed the Sept. 18 crash in a Facebook Live post. Authorities said the 91 year old man’s vehicle was struck from behind in West Chester.
The sheriff’s office said the other driver did not have a valid driver’s license or insurance. Authorities also stated that the driver was in the country illegally. The driver was cited for no operator’s license and assured clear distance ahead before being released, according to the sheriff’s office.
Because the other motorist was uninsured, the 91 year old was left responsible for repair expenses that were not covered by his own insurance, officials said.
The sheriff’s office announced Thursday, Oct. 2, that local real estate investor Roy Smith had learned about the situation and offered to pay the remaining vehicle repair costs in full.
Officials did not disclose the total cost of the repairs or how much Smith offered to pay.
The sheriff’s office publicly thanked Smith for assisting the resident, describing his actions as an example of someone stepping forward after seeing another member of the community in need.
“Roy didn’t have to get involved,” the sheriff’s office said in its announcement. “He simply saw someone who needed help and chose to do something about it.”
The September traffic citations are allegations and do not constitute a finding of guilt.
