TOLEDO, OH — A hazardous materials emergency in North Toledo has prompted evacuations extending toward the Michigan Ohio state line Wednesday morning, October 21, as residents raise concerns about chemical exposure, school operations and workplace safety.
According to the Lucas County Emergency Management Agency, the hazardous materials release occurred at 1050 Progress Ave. in Toledo, initially prompting a half mile evacuation zone Tuesday night before authorities expanded the boundary to one mile.
Updated emergency maps show the evacuation area reaching toward the Michigan border , covering portions of northern Toledo near Alexis Addition, Enterprise Boulevard and surrounding neighborhoods.
A subsequent emergency notification issued at 3:22 a.m. Wednesday instructed individuals within one mile of the release to evacuate and those within three miles to shelter in place.
Residents in the larger shelter zone were directed to remain indoors, close windows and doors, and turn off ventilation systems that bring outside air inside.
The expanding emergency has also generated concern among residents seeking clearer information about the chemical involved and its potential health effects.
In public comments on the Lucas County Sheriff 's Office social media page, residents questioned whether schools would open, whether employees should report to work and what substances might be present in the air.
One commenter speculated about a specific chemical, but that identification has not been independently verified and should not be treated as an official finding.
Others described receiving shelter in place notifications and expressed frustration over the uncertainty surrounding the incident.
Emergency shelter assistance has been established at Shoreland Elementary School and the Meijer parking lot on Alexis Road, with support from the American Red Cross and Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority.
The exact chemical and cause of the release remain under investigation.
Residents should not assume the danger has passed until officials formally lift the protective orders.
The City of Toledo issued another public notification at 4:56 a.m. Wednesday directing residents to its official hazardous materials guidance.
