Marysville, OH – A man was struck in the shoulder by a stray bullet at the Union County Sports Complex Tuesday evening, prompting an evacuation and an investigation into nearby target shooting, authorities said.
According to the Union County Sheriff 's Office, multiple 911 callers reported hearing gunshots near the sports complex at 16000 Simmons Lane at approximately 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. Sheriff's deputies, Marysville police officers, Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers and Marysville firefighters responded and evacuated the complex.
Investigators determined that a male victim had been struck in the left shoulder by a stray bullet. Authorities said the projectile apparently lacked enough velocity to penetrate his skin, leaving a red mark before falling to the ground.
Officers recovered the bullet as evidence for forensic firearms examination. The Sheriff's Office did not report any additional injuries.
As the investigation continued, deputies located a man on Waldo Road who had been target shooting on his private property. Based on the trajectory of the bullet and the distance between that property and the sports complex, investigators believe the stray round originated from the target practice.
Authorities have not identified the man or announced criminal charges. The Sheriff's Office said the individual's firearm was secured for forensic testing to determine whether it matches the bullet recovered at the sports complex.
The man is fully cooperating with investigators, according to the Sheriff's Office.
The incident remains under investigation as authorities await forensic testing. Officials did not provide additional details about where the victim was located within the complex when he was struck.
