Dayton, OH – A violent encounter in Montgomery County late Tuesday night ended with a sheriff's deputy firing a weapon after a fleeing driver allegedly accelerated toward law enforcement officers. The suspect was taken into custody following a crash involving a marked sheriff's cruiser.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff 's Office, deputies were conducting a Violent Crime Reduction targeted enforcement operation Tuesday, Nov. 3, when they attempted to stop a vehicle shortly after 11 p.m. on Old Riverside Drive.
Authorities said the driver was known to have an active felony arrest warrant but fled before deputies could initiate the traffic stop.
Deputies did not pursue the vehicle because an Ohio State Highway Patrol aircraft was already tracking its movements from above.
Several minutes later, the aircraft's crew reported that the driver appeared to be exiting the vehicle on Monroe Avenue.
When deputies arrived, the driver allegedly remained inside the vehicle, drove into the yard of a residence at the dead end of the street and accelerated toward deputies who had exited their patrol vehicles.
One deputy discharged a duty weapon during the confrontation. The suspect's vehicle subsequently crashed into a marked Montgomery County Sheriff's Office cruiser.
Authorities confirmed the suspect was not struck by gunfire, and no deputies sustained physical injuries.
The driver was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Montgomery County Jail.
At Sheriff Rob Streck's request, the Dayton Police Department is conducting an independent criminal investigation. Dayton homicide detectives and evidence technicians responded to process the scene.
The Sheriff's Office Inspectional Services Unit will separately investigate the use of force.
The deputy who fired the weapon has been placed on critical incident leave under department protocol.
Authorities have not released the suspect's identity or announced additional charges in the statement.
