Dayton, OH – The Montgomery County Sheriff 's Office is currently investigating the discovery of evidence envelopes found discarded near the Great Miami River in downtown Dayton. The department became aware of the situation after a video showing the items began circulating on social media.
Forensic Services Unit deputies were dispatched to retrieve the materials. A subsequent investigation determined that the property contained within the envelopes belonged to criminal cases that had already been closed. These documents were originally designated for disposal and had been placed in a dumpster located at the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office headquarters building.
The department stated that the dumpster is typically secured with a lock until it is emptied by a waste carrier. It is believed that an individual entered the dumpster and removed the discarded envelopes, later leaving them near the river. While the act of removing items from a dumpster is not inherently illegal, the Sheriff's Office is working to determine the exact circumstances of the disposal.
Officials are focused on identifying the person responsible for relocating the materials to the riverfront. The Sheriff's Office emphasized its commitment to transparency regarding the handling of sensitive case materials.
