Columbus, OH – Central Ohio is waking up to freezing temperatures, but a dramatic November warmup is already approaching. Temperatures could climb into the lower 60s by Tuesday before another cold spell pushes Columbus toward freezing Friday night.
The changing pattern brings frost concerns, gusty winds, increasing rain chances and a potential 31 degree temperature swing later this week.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. EST Sunday, Nov. 8, across portions of central and southern Ohio, southeastern Indiana and northern Kentucky.
Freeze Warning: Temperatures Fall Near 30 Degrees
The warning covers Columbus and surrounding communities, including portions of Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Pickaway and neighboring counties.
Temperatures as low as 30 degrees could damage sensitive vegetation and unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Residents should protect tender plants and inspect exposed outdoor water connections.
At John Glenn Columbus International Airport, temperatures were reported near 35 degrees at 3:51 a.m. Sunday.
Despite the freezing start, sunshine will help temperatures recover to approximately 57 degrees Sunday afternoon.
Southwest winds could gust to 25 mph, making conditions breezy for outdoor activities.
Columbus Warms to 63 Degrees Before Another Cold Snap
Monday, Nov. 9, brings another chilly morning, with patchy frost possible before 7 a.m.
Afternoon sunshine should push temperatures toward 57 degrees.
Tuesday, Nov. 10, offers the warmest conditions of the five day period, with highs near 63 degrees.
That represents a 33 degree difference from the lowest temperatures highlighted in Sunday's regional Freeze Warning.
The warmer weather offers a useful opportunity for residents to finish yard cleanup and prepare outdoor spaces for colder conditions.
Rain Chances Increase Wednesday Night Into Thursday
Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, looks mostly sunny, with highs around 59 degrees.
However, the weather pattern changes Wednesday night.
Rain chances increase to 40%, followed by a 50% chance of rain Thursday, Nov. 12.
Temperatures should reach only 51 degrees Thursday afternoon before falling near 34 degrees that night.
Drivers along Interstate 70, Interstate 71 and Interstate 270 could encounter wet pavement during periods of rain.
Another Near Freezing Morning Arrives Saturday
Friday, Nov. 13, brings partly sunny skies and highs near 46 degrees.
Temperatures could fall to approximately 32 degrees Friday night into Saturday morning, Nov. 14.
While no additional freeze warning is currently indicated for that period, sensitive outdoor plants could face another cold morning.
The colder temperatures also signal that winterlike conditions are becoming more relevant as Thanksgiving approaches.
No snow is currently included in Columbus' official forecast through Saturday.
