Columbus, OH – Halloween is approaching, and families across Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and West Virginia could be looking at a warmer than normal stretch of weather leading into Saturday, Oct. 31. But will children need heavy coats, or could rain interrupt trick or treating?
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center, its 8 14 day outlook issued Saturday, Oct. 17, strongly favors above normal temperatures across the Ohio Valley from Sunday, Oct. 25, through Saturday, Oct. 31.
The region sits within a broad area of expected warmth extending from the Plains and Great Lakes through the eastern United States. Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky are among the states showing relatively strong probabilities of above normal temperatures.
Will Halloween be unusually warm this year?
For families in Columbus, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Louisville and surrounding communities, the outlook suggests a reduced likelihood of unusually cold weather during Halloween week.
However, above normal temperatures do not guarantee a warm Halloween evening. Children could still need jackets or additional layers once the sun sets.
What about rain on Halloween night?
NOAA's precipitation outlook shows an important difference across the Ohio Valley.
Much of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia favors below normal precipitation during Oct. 25 31, while Indiana lies closer to the transition between below normal and near normal conditions.
That pattern offers some encouragement for outdoor Halloween plans, particularly farther east.
However, below normal precipitation probabilities do not guarantee dry weather on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Rain could still develop during the seven day period, even if overall rainfall finishes below seasonal averages.
For now, the biggest takeaway is the potential for an unusually mild Halloween week across the Ohio Valley, with some areas also favoring drier conditions.
Families should continue monitoring updated forecasts as Halloween approaches, when temperatures and rain chances for actual trick or treating hours become clearer.
