Columbus, OH – Fall may have arrived on the calendar, but Ohio is favored to hold onto warmer than normal weather Oct. 12 18, with a wetter pattern also favored during the week.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, places Ohio within an area favoring above normal temperatures. The state is also within the area favored for above normal precipitation.
The setup could produce a distinctly October combination: relatively mild conditions when averaged across the week, opportunities for rain and occasional chilly nights between weather systems.
Above normal temperatures do not mean every day will be warm. CPC outlooks compare the average temperature during the entire seven day period with what is normal for the time of year.
That leaves open the possibility of colder nights, especially across rural areas and normally cooler locations. Frost could occur if nighttime temperatures and local conditions become favorable, but the CPC outlook does not provide the specific daily lows needed to predict frost.
Ohio’s wetter signal also does not mean rain will fall throughout the week. The outlook indicates that above normal precipitation is favored for the period as a whole without identifying individual storms, rainfall amounts or exact rainy days.
From Cleveland and Toledo to Columbus and Cincinnati, the main signal for Oct. 12 18 is October warmth hanging on while the overall pattern turns wetter than normal .
Residents should watch upcoming National Weather Service forecasts as the period approaches. Those shorter range forecasts will determine when rain is most likely and whether any breaks between systems could allow nighttime temperatures to fall far enough for frost.
