Cleveland, OH – A widespread freeze threat is developing across northern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania this weekend, with temperatures potentially falling to 30 degrees early Sunday morning. Residents from Toledo and Cleveland to Akron, Canton and Youngstown are being urged to prepare for freezing conditions that could damage gardens, agricultural crops and exposed outdoor plumbing.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a Freeze Watch has been issued from late Saturday night, October 17, through Sunday morning, October 18, covering portions of northwestern, north central and northeastern Ohio, along with northwest Pennsylvania.
The alert includes major Ohio communities such as Cleveland, Toledo, Akron, Canton, Youngstown, Lorain, Elyria, Medina, Mansfield, Sandusky, Findlay, Bowling Green, Fremont, Warren and Wooster.
In Pennsylvania, the watch extends into southern Erie and Crawford counties, including Meadville, Titusville, Edinboro, Corry and Union City.
Temperatures could drop as low as 30 degrees in some locations, creating the potential for damaging frost and freezing conditions.
The National Weather Service warns that these conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation while potentially damaging unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Residents with gardens, flowers and potted plants should consider bringing vulnerable vegetation indoors or covering it before temperatures begin falling Saturday night.
Homeowners should also take precautions with exposed outdoor water pipes. The Weather Service recommends wrapping or draining vulnerable pipes or allowing water to drip slowly where appropriate to help prevent freezing.
The freeze threat spans a large portion of northern Ohio, although actual temperatures may vary between communities.
A Freeze Watch means freezing temperatures are possible but not yet certain. The National Weather Service could upgrade the alert to a Freeze Warning if confidence increases.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts Saturday before the overnight cold arrives.
