Cleveland, OH – Three words appearing in a winter weather warning could signal a storm dangerous enough to threaten lives, shut down highways and leave communities stranded. From northern Ohio to western New York, residents preparing for the 2026 27 winter season may encounter heightened warning language reserved for extraordinary winter emergencies.
According to NOAA's Weather Prediction Center, the National Weather Service is expanding the use of "Particularly Dangerous Situation," or PDS, wording in select Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings this winter.
The designation is intended for rare, potentially historic storms when forecasters have high confidence that extreme conditions pose an exceptional threat to human life and critical infrastructure.
Three Words That Could Signal Catastrophic Conditions
Great Lakes communities are familiar with powerful lake effect snowstorms, but PDS wording carries a specific warning about extraordinary danger.
A Blizzard Warning already signals strong winds and severely reduced visibility. Adding PDS language emphasizes an exceptional threat beyond typical winter conditions.
Heavy lake effect snowfall alone does not automatically qualify a storm for the designation.
Why Ohio and New York Should Pay Attention
Communities around Cleveland, Erie, Pennsylvania, and Buffalo, New York, are particularly familiar with intense winter weather near Lake Erie.
During extreme storms, Interstate 90 can become hazardous or impassable as blowing snow reduces visibility and rapidly changing conditions catch motorists off guard.
Major ice storms can also damage trees, bring down power lines and interrupt essential services.
These are possible impacts of severe winter weather, not predictions of an approaching storm.
Is PDS a New Winter Weather Warning?
No. PDS is not a separate warning category or a new storm classification.
Instead, it adds heightened urgency to existing Blizzard Warnings and Ice Storm Warnings when forecasters identify exceptionally dangerous conditions.
Most winter warnings will not include the designation.
What Should Residents Do if They See PDS?
NOAA urges residents receiving PDS enhanced warnings to stay off roads, exercise extreme caution and take immediate protective action.
The expanded terminology does not mean a catastrophic storm is currently forecast for Ohio, Pennsylvania or New York.
However, if "Particularly Dangerous Situation" appears in a winter warning, residents should recognize that forecasters are communicating an extraordinary, potentially life threatening threat.
