Cleveland, OH – The coldest night of the fall season so far is expected across northern Ohio late Saturday, October 17, into early Sunday, with temperatures dropping into the upper 20s and lower 30s across inland communities. Widespread frost and freezing conditions could threaten sensitive outdoor vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, freeze warnings and frost advisories have been issued for portions of the region as a surge of colder air settles across Ohio following Saturday's lingering lake effect rain showers.
Temperatures Could Fall Into the Upper 20s
Forecasters expect the coldest conditions Saturday night into Sunday morning, particularly across inland communities away from Lake Erie.
Temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 20s and lower 30s in many locations, while communities closer to the lakeshore should remain somewhat milder.
The National Weather Service expects widespread frost across inland areas, with patchy frost possible closer to Lake Erie.
Communities around Mansfield, Akron, Canton and Youngstown are among those facing chilly overnight conditions.
Freeze Warnings and Frost Advisories Issued
The National Weather Service forecast map shows freeze warnings and frost advisories covering multiple portions of northern Ohio.
Residents with sensitive outdoor plants should take precautions before temperatures fall Saturday evening.
Freezing conditions can damage or kill vulnerable vegetation, particularly plants that remain exposed overnight.
Covering tender plants or bringing potted vegetation indoors can help reduce the risk of cold related damage.
Rain Ends Saturday Before Sunshine Returns
Before the overnight cold arrives, lake effect rain showers will linger across portions of north central Ohio Saturday morning.
The National Weather Service expects showers to diminish by the afternoon, allowing increasing sunshine across the region.
Saturday's high temperatures will generally range from the upper 40s to lower 50s, with Cleveland near 54 degrees and Akron around 52 degrees.
Despite improving afternoon weather, residents should prepare for a sharp temperature drop overnight.
