AKRON, OH – A sharp weekend cooldown is bringing the threat of widespread frost and potentially freezing temperatures to northern Ohio, with the coldest conditions expected late Saturday, October 17, into early Sunday, October 18. Residents across Akron, Canton, Mansfield and surrounding inland communities should prepare for temperatures that could damage sensitive outdoor plants.
According to the National Weather Service in Cleveland, a chilly air mass combined with high pressure, light winds and mostly clear skies will create favorable conditions for frost development Saturday night into Sunday morning.
Widespread frost is likely across much of the region away from Lake Erie , while colder inland communities could experience temperatures below the freezing mark of 32 degrees.
The latest NWS probability forecast shows a roughly 43% chance of freezing temperatures in Akron, 44% in Canton and 44% in Mansfield. Farther east, Youngstown has approximately a 51% chance, while some communities closer to the lakeshore face a substantially lower risk.
Cleveland's immediate lakeshore is expected to remain warmer, with the NWS graphic indicating little chance of freezing temperatures in the city itself.
Before the frost threat develops, a cold front moving across the region Friday will bring occasional rain showers, breezy conditions and falling temperatures.
Rain chances and wind gusts should gradually decrease Saturday, but afternoon temperatures will struggle to reach 50 degrees in many locations.
Residents with gardens, flowers or other temperature sensitive vegetation should consider covering plants or moving containers indoors before Saturday night.
Motorists traveling early Sunday should also remain alert for changing conditions, particularly in rural and low lying areas where temperatures may be colder.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to monitor updated forecasts as the weekend approaches, especially because frost and freeze conditions can vary significantly over short distances.
