Cincinnati, OH – More rain is expected across the Ohio Valley through the weekend after a wet seven day stretch produced localized flash flooding, with forecasters warning that smaller waterways could rise significantly before conditions improve.
According to the National Weather Service Ohio River Forecast Center, generous amounts of rain have fallen across much of the Ohio Valley during the past seven days. Some locations experienced significant flash flooding, although no main stem rivers reached flood stage.
Forecasters expect another couple of days of rain before a break in the weather arrives early next week.
The additional rainfall could cause significant rises along small streams and rivers. Flash flooding also remains possible, particularly where repeated rainfall affects already wet areas.
Despite those concerns, the Weather Service said larger rivers are not currently expected to flood.
The Ohio River Forecast Center& 39;s 48 hour precipitation outlook through Sunday morning shows additional rainfall across a broad area of the Ohio Valley, including portions of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia and surrounding states.
The forecast follows a particularly wet week across parts of the region. Maps released Friday show some of the highest seven day rainfall totals concentrated in portions of the central Ohio Valley.
Drivers should remain cautious during heavier rainfall, especially around low lying roads, small creeks and locations prone to rapid water accumulation. Water levels can rise quickly during localized downpours even when major rivers remain below flood stage.
Residents should continue monitoring updated National Weather Service forecasts through the weekend, particularly if additional heavy rain develops in areas that have already received substantial rainfall.
