Cincinnati, OH – A widespread freeze threat is developing across Ohio, northern Kentucky and eastern Indiana this weekend, with temperatures potentially dropping into the upper 20s early Sunday morning. Residents from Columbus and Dayton to Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky are being urged to prepare for freezing conditions that could damage gardens, agricultural crops and sensitive vegetation.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, Ohio, a Freeze Watch has been issued from late Saturday night, October 17, through Sunday morning, October 18, covering portions of central, south central, southwestern and west central Ohio, northern and northeastern Kentucky, and east central and southeastern Indiana.
In Ohio, affected communities include Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Springfield, Delaware, Newark, Lancaster, Chillicothe, Hamilton, Middletown, Wilmington, Xenia, Troy, Piqua, Greenville and Portsmouth.
Northern Kentucky communities under the watch include Florence, Covington, Newport, Erlanger, Fort Thomas, Independence, Burlington, Maysville and Williamstown.
The alert also extends into eastern Indiana, including Richmond, Connersville, Lawrenceburg, Batesville, Aurora and Vevay.
Temperatures could fall into the upper 20s to lower 30s, bringing the potential for frost and freezing conditions across the three state region.
The National Weather Service warns that these conditions could kill crops and other sensitive vegetation, particularly plants that remain exposed outdoors.
Residents with gardens, flowers and potted plants should prepare to bring vulnerable vegetation indoors or cover it before temperatures begin dropping Saturday night.
Agricultural communities may also need to take protective measures for remaining crops.
The coldest conditions are expected late Saturday night into Sunday morning, although actual temperatures will vary by location.
A Freeze Watch means freezing temperatures are possible but not guaranteed. The National Weather Service could upgrade the alert to a Freeze Warning if confidence increases.
Residents should monitor updated forecasts Saturday as the overnight freeze threat approaches.
