Batavia, OH Residents across Clermont County and surrounding parts of southwest Ohio are being warned today about an active phone scam involving callers pretending to be deputies. According to authorities, the scammers are using fake warrants and threats to pressure victims into making payments.
How the Scam Works Law enforcement officials reported that individuals are receiving unsolicited phone calls from people claiming to be representatives of the local Sheriff’s Office. The callers often use real names of current or former employees to sound credible. They proceed to inform the resident that there is an active warrant for their arrest due to missed court dates, jury duty, or other legal issues.
The suspects then threaten the victim with immediate arrest unless a fine or bond is paid over the phone. They frequently demand payment via gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, methods that are difficult to trace.
What You Should Know The Sheriff’s Office has issued the following reminders for all residents:
Law enforcement will never call you to demand payment for a warrant over the phone. They will not request payment through gift cards, prepaid debit cards, or cryptocurrency. If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. If you are concerned about your legal status, contact the Sheriff’s Office directly using the official, publicly listed phone number. Do not use the number provided by the suspicious caller. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and to share this warning with friends and family, particularly the elderly who are often targeted by these types of fraudulent activities.
