WILMINGTON, NC – Drivers and waterfront visitors in Wilmington could encounter flooded roads Friday, Oct. 30, as rising tidal waters threaten low lying areas along the Cape Fear River during the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Coastal Flood Advisory remains in effect from noon until 4 p.m. EDT Friday, with up to one half foot of water above ground level possible in vulnerable shoreline locations.
Downtown Wilmington Roads Could See Flooding
The advisory specifically identifies portions of Battleship Road and USS North Carolina Road, where minor coastal flooding could reach approximately six inches deep.
A block of Water Street in downtown Wilmington could also experience flooding reaching approximately three inches.
These conditions could affect motorists traveling near the riverfront, particularly around the afternoon high tide.
Friday, Oct. 30: Highest Flooding Concern
The National Weather Service projects the Cape Fear River at Wilmington will reach approximately 5.9 feet during the 2 p.m. high tide Friday.
That level exceeds the area's 5.5 foot minor flood threshold but remains below the 6.8 foot moderate flooding threshold.
The advisory does not indicate widespread major flooding. However, even shallow water can create hazardous driving conditions in low lying areas.
Drivers Urged to Avoid Flooded Roads
The National Weather Service advises motorists to allow additional travel time because some roads may become temporarily impassable.
Drivers should never attempt to travel through flooded roadways or around barricades.
Residents and businesses with flood prone property should take appropriate precautions.
Weekend Weather Outlook
Despite the coastal flooding concern, Wilmington's forecast calls for sunny skies Friday after patchy morning fog, with temperatures reaching approximately 81 degrees.
Saturday, Oct. 31, brings increasing clouds and a high near 72 degrees, followed by mostly cloudy conditions Sunday, Nov. 1, with highs near 73.
The next forecast high tide early Saturday is not expected to reach minor flood stage.
Residents should monitor National Weather Service updates and local traffic conditions before traveling through vulnerable waterfront areas Friday afternoon
