Welcome, NC – One person is dead following an officer involved shooting Sunday in Davidson County, prompting an independent investigation by state authorities. The incident originated from a domestic situation and involved deputies and members of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.
According to the Davidson County Sheriff 's Office, the shooting occurred Sunday, Oct. 11, in a parking lot at 6455 Old U.S. Highway 52 in Welcome, a community south of Winston Salem.
Authorities confirmed that one individual died during the incident. No law enforcement officers were injured, and officials said there is no known ongoing threat to the surrounding community.
State Investigators Take Over Fatal Shooting Case The Sheriff's Office said deputies were assisted by members of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol during the incident.
Investigators have not publicly disclosed what happened immediately before the shooting, whether the deceased individual was armed or which officers discharged their weapons.
The identity of the deceased person has also not been released in the initial announcement.
Sheriff Simmons requested that the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conduct an independent investigation, consistent with established procedures for officer involved shootings.
The SBI will lead the investigation and examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal encounter.
