Raleigh, NC – Darkening skies and repeated rounds of rain could bring dangerous thunderstorms across central North Carolina on Sunday, Oct. 11. Forecasters warn that isolated storms may produce damaging winds and hail, potentially disrupting travel and outdoor activities.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, a Hazardous Weather Outlook identifies a slight risk of severe thunderstorms Sunday. The greatest concern stretches along and east of the Triad, including communities across the Raleigh Durham region.
Storms could develop from midmorning through early evening, creating changing conditions for drivers and residents attending outdoor events.
Although severe weather is not guaranteed, forecasters say isolated thunderstorms could become strong enough to produce damaging winds and hail.
Sunday Storms Could Affect Travel
Rain and thunderstorms are likely before 9 a.m., followed by additional showers and possible thunderstorms throughout the afternoon.
Raleigh faces a 70% chance of precipitation Sunday, with temperatures reaching approximately 80 degrees.
Southwest winds of 7 to 11 mph could produce gusts reaching 24 mph. Stronger winds remain possible within severe thunderstorms.
Forecasters expect rainfall amounts between one quarter and one half inch, although thunderstorms could produce locally higher totals.
Wet pavement, reduced visibility and sudden downpours could complicate travel along Interstate 40 and other major routes.
Sunday evening brings another opportunity for thunderstorms, with precipitation chances reaching 60%. Conditions should gradually improve overnight as temperatures fall near 64 degrees.
Residents should monitor weather updates and move indoors if thunderstorms approach.
