Raleigh, NC – Central North Carolina faces a sunny but breezy Sunday, Oct. 18, as gusty north winds accompany afternoon temperatures in the lower 60s. By Sunday night, temperatures could fall into the upper 30s in some communities, bringing another chilly October night to the Triangle and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, north winds of approximately 10 to 20 mph are expected Sunday, with occasional gusts reaching 25 mph.
The latest forecast, issued at 3:23 a.m. Sunday, calls for abundant sunshine despite the cool temperatures and persistent breeze.
How windy will North Carolina get Sunday?
Residents across Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Chapel Hill and surrounding central North Carolina communities can expect breezy conditions throughout portions of the day.
Wind gusts near 25 mph may be noticeable in open areas, along exposed roads and around outdoor gathering spaces.
The National Weather Service recommends securing loose outdoor objects, including lightweight decorations, trash containers and patio items that could be displaced by stronger gusts.
How cold will temperatures get tonight?
Sunday afternoon highs are expected to remain in the lower 60s, providing a cool but sunny fall day.
Temperatures will fall considerably after sunset, with overnight lows ranging from the upper 30s to middle 40s across the region.
Residents planning outdoor activities Sunday evening may want jackets or additional layers as temperatures drop.
What does the longer range outlook show?
Looking toward the final week of October, NOAA's Climate Prediction Center favors above normal temperatures across much of North Carolina from Oct. 25–31.
The precipitation outlook places much of central North Carolina near equal chances for above or below normal rainfall, offering no strong signal for a wetter or drier period.
That means Halloween weather remains uncertain, despite the broader expectation for warmer than normal conditions during the final week of October.
For now, residents should prepare for a breezy Sunday afternoon and a chilly night, especially in locations where temperatures approach the upper 30s.
