Raleigh, NC – North Carolina typically holds onto warmth well into October, and the Oct. 12 18 outlook favors temperatures running even warmer than normal for the middle of the month. A wetter than normal pattern is favored as well.
The National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center’s 8 14 day outlook, issued Oct. 4, places North Carolina within an area favoring above normal temperatures. Above normal precipitation is also favored during the seven day period.
The temperature signal is relative to North Carolina’s normal mid October climate. It does not necessarily indicate unusual heat. Instead, temperatures averaged across the week have better odds of finishing above the historical norm.
That could translate into plenty of mild to warm October weather from Charlotte and Raleigh to communities closer to the coast, although the CPC outlook does not provide specific daily temperatures.
Western North Carolina could see larger differences between afternoon and nighttime conditions. Mountain valleys and higher elevations can turn considerably cooler after sunset even while the broader weekly pattern remains warmer than normal.
Rain may also become part of the week’s story. The precipitation outlook favors wetter than normal conditions but does not identify individual weather systems, rainfall amounts or specific days when rain is expected.
Residents should therefore read the Oct. 12 18 outlook as a warm and wetter overall pattern , not a forecast for continuous rain.
Specific temperatures and rain chances should become clearer as the period approaches. Shorter range National Weather Service forecasts will also provide a better indication of how cool mountain nights become while much of North Carolina continues experiencing relatively warm October weather.
