Raleigh, NC – North Carolina could experience a drier than normal weather pattern beginning Saturday, October 17, as federal forecasters favor below normal precipitation across much of the state through Wednesday, October 21. The outlook could mean fewer rain related disruptions for residents planning outdoor activities, weekend travel and fall events.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Climate Prediction Center CPC , its latest 6 10 day precipitation outlook, issued Sunday, October 11, favors below normal precipitation across much of North Carolina during the October 17 21 period.
The forecast places portions of western and central North Carolina in an area with a 33% to 40% probability of below normal precipitation. Much of the state is covered by this general dry signal, although southeastern and coastal sections trend closer to near normal conditions.
The outlook does not guarantee completely dry weather. Instead, it indicates that precipitation totals are more likely to fall below historical averages for this time of year.
Temperatures Could Also Trend Cooler
The CPC's accompanying temperature outlook favors below normal temperatures across much of eastern North Carolina, including portions of the Raleigh area and coastal communities. Western sections of the state generally have weaker temperature signals, with some areas near the normal category.
A separate CPC hazardous temperature outlook identifies a slight risk of unusually cold temperatures on Monday, October 19, primarily farther north across parts of the Northeast. No hazardous temperature risk area is highlighted over North Carolina.
Warm Weather Before the Pattern Change
Before the extended outlook begins, the National Weather Service forecast for Raleigh calls for sunny skies and highs near 86 degrees Tuesday, 90 Wednesday and 88 Thursday.
Residents should remember that the 6 10 day outlook describes broad temperature and precipitation trends rather than specific daily weather conditions.
Updated local forecasts will help determine whether individual communities experience rain, cooler mornings or continued sunshine as the October 17 21 period approaches.
