Newport, NC – A powerful offshore nor'easter is bringing dangerous coastal conditions to eastern North Carolina, with ocean overwash, strong winds and flooding expected to threaten portions of the Outer Banks through Tuesday, October 20. Forecasters warn that some impacts could continue into the middle of the week.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, a slow moving low pressure system will produce prolonged coastal flooding, hazardous marine conditions and strong northeasterly winds, with the greatest concerns focused on Hatteras and Ocracoke islands.
Coastal Flooding Could Become Dangerous Ocean overwash is likely near high tide Sunday, October 18, with conditions expected to worsen Monday and Tuesday.
The National Weather Service forecasts minor to moderate coastal flooding along portions of the Outer Banks, with water levels potentially reaching 1 to 3 feet above ground level.
Some oceanfront locations could experience moderate flooding of 2 to 4 feet above ground level.
Forecasters specifically warned residents of Hatteras and Ocracoke islands to prepare for the possibility of becoming stranded for multiple days.
Emergency access could become difficult or dangerous during prolonged flooding.
Wind Gusts Could Reach 55 MPH Strong north to northeast winds are expected to continue, with gusts reaching 45 to 55 mph along portions of the coast.
The strongest winds are expected around Monday.
Offshore waves could reach 15 to 20 feet in some marine areas, producing dangerous boating conditions and powerful breaking surf.
Coastal roads may experience ocean overwash, while ferry operations could face disruptions lasting into midweek.
Storm Impacts Could Continue Beyond Tuesday Forecasters have the highest confidence in significant coastal impacts through Tuesday.
However, uncertainty remains about the storm's movement beyond that point.
If the system moves farther offshore, conditions could gradually improve Wednesday. A closer or stronger storm track could prolong significant impacts.
Residents and visitors should monitor official forecasts, avoid flooded roads and prepare for possible travel interruptions.
