Newport, NC – Families across eastern North Carolina heading outdoors for Halloween trick or treating Saturday evening can expect dry conditions but falling temperatures, with readings dropping from the mid 60s to the mid 50s between 5 and 9 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service office in Newport/Morehead City, a cold front that moved through the region Friday night has left behind cooler conditions for Halloween festivities. Forecasters expect mostly cloudy skies, no measurable precipitation and northeast winds throughout the evening.
Temperatures are forecast to reach approximately 66 degrees at 5 p.m., providing comfortable conditions as families begin their Halloween activities.
By 7 p.m., when trick or treating typically reaches its busiest period, temperatures are expected to fall to around 61 degrees. Northeast winds of 6 to 12 mph could make conditions feel cooler, particularly for children wearing lightweight costumes.
The National Weather Service predicts temperatures will drop further to approximately 56 degrees by 9 p.m., with winds easing to 5 to 8 mph.
Sunset is expected around 6:15 p.m., meaning many families will be walking through neighborhoods after dark.
Forecasters recommend dressing in layers, especially for children planning to remain outdoors for several hours. Jackets or warmer clothing underneath costumes may help keep trick or treaters comfortable as temperatures decline.
Parents are also encouraged to provide flashlights, glow sticks or reflective bags to improve visibility along neighborhood streets.
The forecast covers communities throughout eastern North Carolina, including Newport, Morehead City, New Bern and surrounding Carteret and Craven counties.
Despite the evening cooldown, the National Weather Service expects favorable Halloween weather overall, with no rain anticipated during the main trick or treating window.
Families should prepare for cooler temperatures after sunset while enjoying Saturday night's festivities.
