Hickory, NC – Residents across eight western and central North Carolina counties are being urged to protect sensitive outdoor plants as a Frost Advisory takes effect at midnight tonight, Saturday, Nov. 7, with temperatures expected to fall as low as 33 degrees by Sunday morning, Nov. 8.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville Spartanburg, South Carolina, the advisory will remain in effect from midnight until 9 a.m. Sunday as colder overnight temperatures create favorable conditions for frost formation.
Eight North Carolina Counties Under Advisory
The Frost Advisory covers Alexander, Catawba, Davie, Iredell, Rowan, eastern McDowell, greater Burke and greater Caldwell counties.
Communities included in the advisory area include Hickory, Statesville, Salisbury, Morganton, Lenoir, Newton, Mocksville, Taylorsville, Marion and Mooresville.
Other affected locations include Granite Falls, Valdese, St. Stephens, Bethlehem, Advance and Hiddenite.
Temperatures Could Fall Near Freezing
Forecasters expect temperatures to drop to approximately 33 degrees in the coldest locations.
Although temperatures may remain slightly above the freezing mark of 32 degrees, frost can still form on exposed surfaces and vegetation.
The National Weather Service warns that frost could harm sensitive outdoor vegetation, with some plants potentially killed if left uncovered.
Residents Urged to Protect Plants
Residents should take precautions before midnight Saturday, particularly those with gardens, flowers and other cold sensitive plants.
Bringing potted plants indoors or covering vulnerable vegetation can help reduce potential frost damage.
The advisory is scheduled to expire at 9 a.m. Sunday as temperatures begin recovering after sunrise.
While the coldest conditions are expected overnight, residents throughout the advisory area should monitor local temperatures and updated forecasts.
The National Weather Service encourages residents to take steps now to protect tender plants from the approaching cold.
