GREENVILLE, NC — An increasing threat of severe thunderstorms is developing across eastern North Carolina Friday, Nov. 6, with damaging winds, heavy rainfall and a few possible tornadoes threatening communities from Greenville and Kinston toward New Bern and the coast.
According to the National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, portions of eastern North Carolina have been upgraded to a Level 2 of 5 slight risk for severe thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening.
Forecasters have moderate concern for stronger storms developing across the yellow shaded risk area, including communities around Greenville, Kinston and New Bern.
Damaging Winds and Tornadoes Possible The National Weather Service identifies damaging wind gusts as the primary severe weather threat.
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms could also produce heavy rainfall and frequent lightning.
Forecasters caution that a few tornadoes are possible, although tornado development is not guaranteed.
Residents should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions and potential weather warnings.
Storm Timeline Across Eastern North Carolina The National Weather Service has outlined three primary time windows for thunderstorms Friday:
1–4 p.m.: Greenville, Kinston, Kenansville and surrounding inland communities. 3–7 p.m.: New Bern, Jacksonville, Belhaven and nearby areas. 5–11 p.m.: Morehead City, Ocracoke, Hatteras and portions of the Outer Banks. These windows represent expected storm timing, not continuous severe weather at every location.
Residents Urged to Prepare Strong thunderstorms could create hazardous driving conditions, especially during periods of heavy rain and gusty winds.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather warnings.
The National Weather Service recommends having multiple reliable ways to receive emergency alerts.
If a tornado warning is issued, move immediately to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
The greatest severe storm risk is concentrated across inland portions of eastern North Carolina, although coastal communities may also experience thunderstorms.
