Asheville, NC – Western North Carolina could face heavy rainfall and localized flooding this weekend as moisture from Tropical Storm Isaias spreads north, even though the storm's center is currently forecast to pass well west of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville Spartanburg, Isaias continues to organize over the southwestern Gulf and is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane before making landfall across the Deep South late this week.
For western North Carolina, the primary concern is not a direct tropical strike but the moisture surrounding the system.
Forecasters said tropical moisture is likely to affect the region this weekend, bringing the potential for heavy rainfall and localized flooding across the western Carolinas and northeast Georgia.
Based on the current forecast, however, major impacts are considered unlikely .
Considerable uncertainty remains because changes to Isaias' track are still possible over the next couple of days. Any shift could influence how much tropical moisture reaches the southern Appalachian Mountains and where the heaviest rain develops.
Before the tropical moisture arrives, Asheville and surrounding mountain communities will experience sunny and warm conditions. Asheville is forecast to reach around 80 degrees Wednesday , with temperatures warming into the lower 80s Thursday.
The National Weather Service expects Thursday temperatures across portions of the region to run nearly 10 degrees above normal for early October.
Residents across Asheville, Buncombe County and western North Carolina should monitor forecast updates before weekend travel or outdoor activities, particularly in flood prone mountain valleys and areas near streams.
