ASHEVILLE, NC — The coldest night of the week is approaching western North Carolina, with temperatures expected to fall into the lower 30s Saturday night, Oct. 17, bringing renewed concerns about frost and potentially freezing conditions across the state's mountain communities.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville Spartanburg, Saturday night into Sunday morning, Oct. 18, will bring the week's coldest temperatures, particularly across the North Carolina mountains, where frost and possible freezing conditions could develop.
The latest forecast shows temperatures falling to approximately 32 degrees in Burnsville , while Waynesville and Newland are expected to reach around 33 degrees.
Asheville is forecast to drop to 36 degrees, with similar readings expected in Brevard and Robbinsville. Franklin could reach approximately 37 degrees.
Farther east, temperatures are expected to remain somewhat warmer, with Marion and Lenoir near 38 degrees, Hickory and Statesville around 39 degrees, and Charlotte near 42 degrees.
The coldest conditions are expected between Saturday evening and Sunday morning, with the National Weather Service forecast graphic covering 8 p.m. Saturday through 10 a.m. Sunday .
Temperatures approaching the freezing mark could threaten sensitive plants and gardens, particularly in mountain valleys and higher elevation communities where colder air may settle overnight.
Residents with vulnerable outdoor vegetation should consider taking precautions before Saturday evening, including bringing potted plants indoors or covering sensitive plants where appropriate.
The colder weather may also affect residents attending outdoor events or traveling through the mountains late Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
While frost and freezing temperatures are possible in the mountains, the forecast does not indicate that widespread freezing conditions will extend into the South Carolina Upstate or the Charlotte metropolitan area.
Communities including Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina, are expected to remain in the lower 40s.
Residents across western North Carolina are encouraged to monitor updated National Weather Service forecasts as the weekend approaches, especially in areas where temperatures could reach freezing.
