Winnipeg, MB – A 23-year-old man was taken into custody Tuesday afternoon after officers with the Winnipeg Police Service’s Guns and Gangs Unit allegedly found a loaded sawed-off .22 calibre rifle and methamphetamine during an arrest in the William Whyte neighbourhood.

According to police, investigators had been looking into alleged drug trafficking activity in the area since November 2025 and had an outstanding warrant for the suspect. Officers located the man just before 3 p.m. on Tuesday, outside an apartment complex in the 100 block of Powers Street. After what authorities described as a brief foot chase, the man was arrested without further incident.

During a search, officers allegedly recovered several items, including:
• a loaded sawed-off .22 calibre rifle
• a small amount of .22 calibre ammunition
• approximately one gram of methamphetamine, which police estimate to hold a street value of $50

Police say the man now faces multiple charges, including possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, storing a restricted weapon contrary to regulations, carrying a concealed weapon, unauthorized firearm possession, and possession of a scheduled substance. He is also charged with two counts of allegedly failing to comply with conditions of an undertaking, as well as an outstanding warrant for failing to attend court.

The suspect was detained in custody following the arrest.

Residents in the William Whyte and North End areas are encouraged to report suspicious activity as the Guns and Gangs Unit continues its ongoing enforcement efforts.
